About Aubrie and her Journey
Aubrie’s story is one of courage and resilience. At 75 years old, she embarked on a 1,000-mile walk across diverse landscapes, driven by a desire for personal growth, to support meaningful charities, and to inspire others to pursue their dreams regardless of age. Her memoir, ‘Finding Peace in the Promise,’ captures the challenges and triumphs of this extraordinary journey, offering readers insight into her motivations and the enduring human spirit.
Throughout her life, Aubrie Abernethy has felt a deep connection to the natural world. The experiences of hiking, camping, walking, and observing life all around her, brought her great joy and a sense of contentment.
Finding Peace in the Promise is her first book and was written to share insights she had when she intentionally walked 1000 miles during the year she turned 75 years old. She walked in six different locations as she sought to become healthier with less anxiety. She also wanted to reach out beyond herself by supporting 30 walks for charity.
Aubrie is a native of, and lives in Johnson City, Tennessee with her husband, Jim, and their dog Molly. She has four children, four grandchildren, and a large extended family, some of whom walked alongside her. During her career she was an elementary school teacher in several locations across Tennessee. Following her retirement, she privately tutored neurodivergent elementary children…specializing in strategies for teaching reading and math. Aubrie graduated from Converse College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Shortly after that, she earned a Master in the Art of Teaching degree from ETSU. She is a member of Lost State Writers Guild of Tri-Cities area of TN/VA. Aubrie serves on the Board of Directors of the Friends of Roan Mountain.

During her “spare” time, Aubrie enjoys being outside, whether it is on her screened porch, walking the hills and trails, spectating at her grandsons’ athletic events, or just hanging out with her friends and family breathing in whatever nature surrounds them. In addition to walking and writing, Aubrie enjoys painting, crafting, playing Rummy or Rook with her husband almost every night, and Mah Jongg with her friends during the day. She enjoys serving in her church and strives to live fully through life’s experiences…including both difficult and joyful ones.
