SYNOPSIS
The title Finding Peace in the Promise: A Memoir of Walking with Intention refers to the idea that even during the difficult times of life, there is always hope and peace to be found. You just need to connect with your heart and take one step at a time.
The story is about a visualization I had as I approached my 75th birthday. It takes place in the southern United States and in Costa Rica during 2022. I wanted to celebrate this milestone with gratitude for my past and hope for the future. I envisioned myself as a healthier, less anxious person who would be able to become more fully engaged with my family and friends in the last quarter of my birth century. I sought peace and contentment. As I thought it through, I realized intentional walking might be a way of clearing my headspace, creating room to examine my life. Three threads wove through this tapestry of intentionality: walking with intention for personal wellness, walking with intention for charity, and walking with intention to inspire others.
Walking for personal wellness helped to lessen the anxiety I experienced in my day-to-day life, clearing the way for more enriching experiences with those around me. My focus was sharper, my heart more open, and my psyche more balanced.
Walking for charity satisfied a need I had to reach out to others in a tangible way. Each walk directly supported a charity with the proceeds that were raised. The charities I supported, all 30 of them, benefited others in a small way. I am reminded of the words of an anonymous writer who once wrote, “Helping one person might not change the world, but it could change the world for one person.” That was my goal in reaching out beyond myself.
Walking to inspire others came more subtly. During the year of walking, family and friends became curious about my motivation for walking 1000 miles. As I explained my reasons, the comments and questions that followed revealed inspired ideas of their own.
I adopted the mantra, “She believed she could, so she did,” and made a promise to myself that I would walk 1000 miles with the three threads of intention in mind. That was January I, 2022.
